Navigating on-campus life during a global pandemic

Hey there, pal! Welcome back to the best club on campus (this is, in fact, a factual statement. Look it up). My name is Camille, and today we are going to be talking about going back to campus and what that looks like in this unprecedented time. But first, let me introduce myself!

So, like I said, my name is Camille. I am a senior here at UNL and this is my second year as the Ad Club Copywriter, which is probably one of the best things about my college experience thus far. I joined Ad Club back as a freshman as a way to get involved. I knew that “being involved” was important and looked good on resumes, but I had little to no idea how incredible of an experience it would actually be. (I’m about to get CHEESY). You see, Ad Club is so much more than just a line on my resume. Ad Club is a community of people who care about advertising, a community of people who want to help each other excel, a community of people who are there to celebrate my successes and who are there to lift me up during my downfalls. I’ve made some amazing friends through this organization and met the GREATEST mentor I ever could’ve asked for (Kelli Britten, I’m talkin’ bout you). So, if you’re on the fence about joining, I highly recommend you do. Since joining, I’ve landed a job here at the University, won a scholarship for advertising, got inducted into the AAF Alpha Delta Sigma Honor Society, earned a spot on the National Student Advertising Competition team, landed an internship at my dream agency, made it to the final round of interviews for internships across the country and had the best time of my life. Do you need more reasons to join? I could keep going…

So, we are back on campus! It’s been a long summer break (or a long spring break?) and we are all so excited to be out of quarantine, to see our friends and to have that fun college experience. But hold up, we are still in the midst of a global pandemic. I am here to remind you of the importance of wearing your mask, social distancing no matter how hard it may seem and adhering to the rules of the university and the CDC.

“Calm down, Camille. We’re young and healthy, even if we get the virus nothing bad will happen.”

Well, yes and no. COVID-19 seems to take it easier on our generation, however, there have been many cases where unknown, underlying conditions pop-up after a person is exposed to the virus. Even if you are the epitome of health, think about the people around you. Professors, administrators, fellow students and campus workers could all have underlying conditions you don’t even know about, and exposure to the virus could be deadly to them. Do you really want to be the person responsible for someone ending up in the hospital or even dead? Yeah, I didn’t think so. So, wear your mask. Wash your hands. And stay away from parties. We’ve already seen universities shut down because of careless students partying and I know no one here at UNL wants to be sent home early. Once the pandemic is over, party ALL you want, but until then, think about the greater good. We know you are all upstanding people, so do your part in putting an end to this nasty virus and maybe Ad Club will buy you some pizza once it’s over!

That’s it for now, stay tuned for more blog-style content, videos from professionals, Zoom parties and membership info coming very, very soon!

xoxo, Camille
