Or maybe you just want to learn some simple tricks to improve your writing? Either way, I’ve got you covered!
Here are three tips to write like a pro:
1. Write the Way You Talk.
This one is my personal secret… don’t tell anyone! Of course, this tip does not always work with essays or academic papers, but it’s a crucial part of copywriting. We, as humans, tend to talk in a casual, straightforward way. So, utilize that! An audience doesn’t want to be bored to death by big, fancy words, they want you to speak to them like a human. In fact, the easier your copy is to read and understand, the better. After you write something, read it back to yourself out loud. This will not only help you identify any errors you might have made, but it will help you simplify your writing and keep all those words sounding crisp and compelling!
2. Practice, Practice, and More Practice!
You know the saying “practice makes perfect?” Well, it’s stuck around for a reason. The easiest way to improve your writing is to write as often as possible. Personally, I carve out a dedicated time in my week to just sit down and write. Not sure what to write about? Google is your best friend! You can Google copywriting exercises, chat up your professor for some extra “work,” or mock-up some pretend copy for your favorite company. The last one is my personal fav. I promise the more you write, the more comfortable you will get and the better your craft will become. Writing is a muscle, EXERCISE IT!
3. Be CREATIVE
Yes, the best copywriting is clear and concise, but it’s also full of creativity. Do some research on the topic you are writing about and get creative! Use imagery, similes, metaphors, etc. Find out what would resonate with your audience and get personal with it. We all love when writing feels personalized, so make that audience feel special!
That’s all I got for ya today, folks! Remember, writing is a skill that takes time to develop. Know your AP Style and basic grammar rules and get to practicing!
